Surroundings
OVERVIEW
Counting both the Forbidden City and Tiananmen
Square as its neighbours, Beijing Hotel NUO boasts the most desirable address
in the city for sightseers, offering unparalleled access to many of the city’s must-visit
historic attractions.
FORBIDDEN CITY
For two dynasties, Emperors ruled ‘all under
heaven’ from the world’s biggest palace complex at the heart of Beijing. Encircled
by three kilometres of red citadel walls, for most of its history the Forbidden
City was off-limits to mere mortals. Now it’s yours to explore, and mere
minutes from our door.
TIANANMEN SQUARE
Visible from the heritage building of the hotel,
China’s most famous public square is also one of the world’s largest, flanked
by the National Museum, the front gate of the Forbidden City famously hung with
the portrait of Mao Zedong, and China’s seat of government, the Great Hall of
the People.
NATIONAL MUSUEM
Almost directly opposite Beijing Hotel NUO, this
is China’s most important museum, boasting one of the largest collections of
Chinese antiquities in the world. Foreign nationals are required to present a
passport upon entry.
WANGFUJING SHOPPING STREET
Beijing’s most famous area for shopping,
Wangfujing presents a mix of traditional Chinese emporiums selling hats,
medicine and fabrics alongside modern temples of retail like Apple and Nike.
JINGSHANG PARK
Climb to the top of this pristine park for
jaw-dropping views of the Forbidden City rooftops. The
45-metre-high mound is actually the spoil dug out of the Forbidden City’s moat,
which conveniently served as both windbreak and spirit barrier protecting the
Emperor in his palace.
DRUM & BELL TOWERS
These ancient bastions of time-keeping stand due
north of the Forbidden City along Beijing’s central axis, and the surrounding
neighbourhood of traditional ‘hutong’ alleyways is perfect for strolling.
TEMPLE OF HEAVEN
The Emperor would travel south from the
Forbidden City before the winter solstice to pray at this alter complex for a
bounteous harvest. These days, tourists swell between the Round Alter and the
Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, but the surrounding parkland is some of the
most peaceful in the city.
Room Accomodation
Beijing Hotel NUO offers 171 elegantly appointed guest rooms and suites that tastefully mix east and west. Accommodations in the original Heritage Building present period French style and furnishings, while those in the northern annex offer more space and the benefits of club facilities for business travellers in Club Rooms.
