Can MICE events be sustainable?

Posted on 2023-11-29

Sentosa is proud to be at the forefront of sustainable event hosting, earning the distinction of being Asia's first destination to receive the Global Sustainable Tourism Council for Destinations (GSTC-D) certificate. The island's commitment to preserving its rich heritage and minimizing its carbon footprint while conserving its diverse flora and fauna runs deep in its veins.

Did you know that Sentosa has set ambitious goals to become a carbon-neutral destination by 2030? Already implementing a range of sustainable and eco-friendly practices, Sentosa offers a unique setting for a MICE-meets-vacation experience like no other. From the phasing out of single-use plastics and promoting electric car-sharing to innovative methods of nature conservation, Sentosa is dedicated to becoming a true "green" destination. Recognised with a MICE Sustainability Certification by SAECOS , Sentosa is actively engaged in the Sentosa Carbon Neutral Network, a collaborative effort with island partners to further sustainability initiatives.

By 2030, Sentosa aims to power 10% of its electricity needs with renewable energy sources, contributing to its transition to a zero-waste destination through waste-to-energy systems and embracing a circular economy. Working alongside partners, Sentosa is implementing infrastructure solutions to mitigate carbon emissions and generate renewable energy equivalent to offsetting the emissions from approximately 300,000 hotel room nights annually. Since 2020, Sentosa's fleet of beach shuttles has been fully electric, and by 2025, 100% of the island's on-island public transportation will be electric, with the progressive deployment of electric buses. Furthermore, all SDC-owned carparks will be equipped with electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities by 2030.

Sentosa's commitment to sustainability is not only a promise but a tangible reality. By choosing Sentosa as your event destination, you contribute to the collective effort towards a greener future while enjoying an unforgettable and environmentally conscious experience.
